A Fish Named Fred

Fred’s message is as simple as it is important;
be proud and stand out.
It comes from the brand's core belief that life is
just too short to be average.
With colourful and original designs,
AFNF works hard to keep every collection fresh,
sharp and impossible to miss out on.
So who are those so called Freds?
Being a Fred is something of all ages,
all occupations and all nationalities.
Freds can be easily recognized
due to their ability to turn nothing into something,
grey into colourful and ordinary into legendary.
With a Fred you will never get bored.
A fish named Fred was founded from the
conviction that the world needed some extra
colour and fun. Most fashion stores offer a
select range of uniform looking brands.
However, AFNF dares to jump out of the bowl
to break the averageness amongst all.
During the past 6 years, Fred has evolved into
a globally recognized brand with customers
in over 26 countries.

How sustainable is the production?
We currently produce in three countries: Turkey, China and India.
Turkey and China are working on getting their BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative). BSCI is a social and production standard that obligates production companies to produce according to prescribed conditions, both with regard to working conditions and the integral production process.
Currently, 80% of our manufacturers meet the BSCI requirements.
One of our producers in India works according to the SA 8000 certification, the highest possible standard. The process to reach this level takes years.
The jerseys & knitwear of our summer collection 2020 will be made from 100% organic cotton. The production of raw fabrics is completely transparent and certified. The dye used on our products is made from high quality organic paint-bleaching materials and printing ink, all GOTS certified. All wastewater and waste materials are processed by certified companies for reuse.
Sustainability is one of the most important factors in our business strategy. The world in which we live can only have a future if we further integrate sustainable fashion production into our business processes. To this, we are committed, so that our Fred can always keep swimming in clean water.
How is this done?
We do this by reusing worn clothing and using sustainable materials such as certified organic cotton. We also use fabric blends where organic cotton is mixed in with upcycled polyester from plastic bottles. Additionally, A fish named Fred only works with certified produces with the highest standards.
Not only do we make sure our supply chain is sustainable, but we also support organizations that help better the world. Last year we donated to The Plastic Soup Foundation. This year we’re supporting The World Fish Migration Day. An organization focused on removing dams and other constructions that prevent fish from spawning. We’ve made special t-shirts in support of The World Fish Migration Day. Part of the proceeds will go to the foundation.
Another part of our sustainability efforts is donating shirts to Van Hulley. They work with women that struggle to find employment. With these women, they make boxers from discarded clothes.
We are currently working on a project in which bags are made from used A fish named Fred clothing. Giving these used clothes a new life. Through these projects, we help less fortunate workers in the Netherlands gain a sense of responsibly and help their self-esteem grow.
Our sweaters, polos and sweats are currently made from organic cotton. This is an important step in the development of increasingly sustainable production. From next summer (Spring 2020 collection) our jerseys & knitwear will be made entirely from high-quality 100% certified organic cotton. Our products are packaged in polybags made from recycled materials. This is an important step, but finding even better alternatives is one of our priorities. This is how A fish named Fred continues to develop and contribute to a sustainable world.
